Union Files Unfair Labor Practice With NLRB<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

SAG-AFTRA VIDEO GAME PERFORMERS TO HOLD PICKET AT ELECTRONIC ARTS ON THURSDAY, OCTOBER 10<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

SAG-AFTRA members who perform in video games went on strike against all video game companies signed to the Interactive Media Agreement, effective 12:01 a.m. on Friday, July 26.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SAG-AFTRA is striking this contract so that members working in interactive media (video games) can continue earning a living doing the job they love. Our members\u2019 work and likenesses are being exploited by artificial intelligence, and video game companies have refused to offer a fair deal that addresses this existential threat.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Just this morning<\/s>, SAG-AFTRA<\/a> called a strike today against popular online game League of Legends<\/em>, after a company that produces the game tried to subvert the video game strike. The union believes those actions, by the company Formosa Interactive LLC, to be a flagrant violation of labor law and has filed an unfair labor practice charge against the company with the National Labor Relations Board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The complaint comes after Formosa tried to \u201ccancel\u201d one of its struck video games shortly after the start of SAG-AFTRA\u2019s video game strike. When they were told that was not possible, they secretly transferred the game to a shell company and sent out casting notices for \u201cNON-UNION\u201d talent only. SAG-AFTRA charges that these serious actions are egregious violations of core tenets of labor law \u2013 that employers cannot interfere with performers\u2019 rights to form or join a union and they cannot discriminate against union performers. The unilateral and surreptitious transfer of union work to a \u201cnon-union\u201d shell company is an impermissible and appalling attempt to evade a strike action and destroy performers\u2019 rights under labor law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In light of Formosa\u2019s unfair labor practices, SAG-AFTRA\u2019s National Executive Director, with the advice and consent of the Interactive Media Agreement Negotiating Committee, has called a strike of League of Legends<\/em>, one of the company\u2019s most high-profile games. SAG-AFTRA members must immediately cease providing covered services to League of Legends<\/em> and the game will be updated on the union\u2019s search function as a struck game. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Formosa is one of the members of the bargaining group that has refused to agree to protect our members against the unethical use of A.I. Until today, League of Legends<\/em>was one of several games that remained unstruck. Formosa is the union signatory and provided voiceover services to League of Legends<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Said National Executive Director & Chief Negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, \u201cIt\u2019s bad enough that Formosa and other companies are refusing to agree to the fair A.I. terms that have been agreed to by the film, television, streaming, and music industries, as well as more than 90 other game developers. To commit illegal unfair labor practices is beyond the pale and won\u2019t be tolerated by SAG-AFTRA members. Formosa will be held accountable, starting with an immediate strike of League of Legends.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Interactive Media Agreement Negotiating Committee Chair Sarah Elmaleh said, \u201cLeague of Legends <\/em>is a game of champions. Instead of championing the union performers who bring their immense talent and experience to beloved characters, decision-makers at Formosa have chosen to try to evade and abandon them. Such double-dealing is very disappointing from a longtime committed union signatory. And such regrettable choices are unnecessary when our union committee and staff are as collaborative and excited to create protected work as our performers love to collaborate with game makers, and love this work.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
