The Kung Fu of Comic Cons – SiliCon 2022: My Latest Feature for KungFuMagazine.com

I’ve been thinking a lot about in-person events, particularly Comic-Cons. So I was already looking forward to Gene Ching’s coverage of his own recent excursions. I’ve been fortunate enough to count tackling conventions among our various team-ups and was delighted by his mention of some of that in his latest piece.

But… like the sword master he is, Gene cuts to some key insights about Cons and their place in our culture. This is a subject that is going to come up again, though I’m hesitant to say it’s trending —yet. But as we consider how in-person events will be in a post-isolation society, looking back at the how’s, what’s and why’s may be helpful. For POP culture in general and comic conventions in particular, it’s this type of on-the-ground reporting that maps out the harder to find oral history that attendees and creatives come to conventions for.
